Dear Friends,
On behalf of the Steering Committee of the Continuum of Learning (CoL), I am excited to share the “highlights version” of the CoL’s second Annual Yearbook. It has been my privilege to serve as the CoL’s Steering Committee chair since its inception in March 2008.
We are proud to announce that over the past four years, education-related initiatives fostered by the CoL have brought $6.625 million of external funding to our community. We would not have been in a position to receive this external support had it not been for the existence of our vibrant education collaborative.
This Annual Yearbook is notable for reporting on data that has not been previously presented in any other publication:
- We present data on the results of a large-scale program for screening pre-kindergarten children in Sangamon County. This data points to the need for parent education and community-level interventions to ensure that all children in Sangamon County are kindergarten ready.
- We also present county-level data on reading and math achievement for 3rd, 5th, 8th, and 11th graders. We believe such data is germane to understanding the human resource challenges we face as a region.
To our knowledge, this is the first time that such data has been calculated. All Springfield and Sangamon County citizens should be proud that through the CoL, our community – as a community – has demonstrated a sustained commitment to improving learning outcomes and increasing educational attainment. Based on the significant progress made in the past year, we have every reason to expect that the foundation has been laid for continued progress in the years to come.
